WHAT IS THE VISION?
Our vision is to see disciples awakened, churches renewed, and communities transformed. Within the next ten years, we will make disciples and plant or revitalize churches in strategic areas locally and globally. Our culture will be undeniably missional. We will become a church who equips and sends her best people to advance God's kingdom, knowing that generosity and sacrifice for the kingdom is always multiplied. The foundation of this vision begins with a three-year campaign to answer the question, “What is God’s heart beyond our generation, geography, and our now?”
WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF THE CAMPAIGN?
The campaign consists of three parts: (1) Pray beyond our geography. We will set our minds to the specific places that God is calling Perkinsville through guided prayer opportunities. (2) Discover beyond our generation. We will set our eyes around us to discover the next generation of disciples through focused community events and disciple making training. (3) Invest beyond our now. We will set our hearts towards the future by investing in expanded ministry facilities to prepare and equip laborers for the harvest. This Campaign Project FAQ deals primarily with the third part of the campaign (invest).
HOW DOES A BUILDING HELP US FULFILL THE VISION?
Perkinsville, as a sending church, must provide solid foundations for the next generation disciple. Our current facilities are already inadequate to meet the current needs in children’s ministry and large gatherings/trainings. The new facility will firm up our local needs so that, as we transition to a new mission culture, our current location becomes an excellent preparing and equipping place for years to come.
WHAT DOES THE BUILDING GET US?
Members of the Planning Committee are meeting regularly with a master planner and architect. The priority for the new building is (1) children’s space and (2) banquet/training space. Because of the many variables included in construction costs, construction documents will not be finalized for several months. For visualization purposes, the facility will be approximately 10,000 square feet with a meeting room large enough to seat 330 people and children’s space large enough to accommodate future growth. Conceptual campus diagrams will be available September 10, but more detailed construction diagrams and plans will not be ready for presentation until later in the year.
HOW MUCH IS IT GOING TO COST?
The project will cost between 1.2-1.5 million dollars.
WHAT ABOUT A TIME FRAME?
The campaign commitment phase is 6 weeks, beginning on September 10. The campaign is a three-year giving season. During the campaign, we hope to break ground on the facility so that, by the conclusion of the Beyond Campaign, we have a new facility for the next generation.
WHERE WILL WE GET THE MONEY?
Based on 18 years of data and our past giving trends, a successful campaign at Perkinsville will result in about $600,000 of gifts over the three-year campaign, although this number does not reflect unplanned gifts that may be received. Based on these projected numbers, it would take 2 campaigns and 6 years to have the cash on hand to build the facility on today’s construction costs (we would be building a facility in 2023 to meet the needs of Perkinsville in 2017). We want to be responsible stewards and understand the risk that can be involved in borrowing money, however, we also recognize that borrowing is necessary to complete this campaign project in any reasonable amount of time. We will have to use a combination of available cash from the campaign and a loan to complete the facility project.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO PAY IT OFF?
If we assume that we borrow a maximum of $900,000 at a 20-year rate, we are accepting an approximately $6,500/month debt service. This debt assumes that we break ground 18 months into the campaign and have $300,000 cash on hand.
WHAT IF WE DON’T BUILD?
The facility is important to our vision, but it does not define our vision. Most of us recognize the immediate need for additional ministry space (and have for several years). If we choose not to build, we will have to seriously consider how we accommodate additional children’s ministry space and church wide growth. It would not be impossible to continue working in a small space, but it will inevitably limit our opportunity in the future.
WHAT ABOUT RENOVATING EXISTING BUILDING?
Thanks to a proactive Facility & Asset Management Committee, our aging building is in great shape. Once a new building is complete, we will then be able to reclaim some of the current nursery space and children’s space for Sunday School rooms and storage. Renovation costs are not included in this project cost estimate.
WHAT ABOUT OUR CURRENT OR FUTURE WORSHIP SPACE?
We all recognize that additional worship space would be good, however, new worship space is far more expensive than the type of facility that we are talking about here. Ideally, we will continue to operate with 2 or even 3 worship services in the future. The vision is not to continuously grow on our current campus. Rather, to invest in church planting and revitalizing so that we actually send part of our membership to other churches in the future. Prayerfully, we would handle future space needs by sending out. Of course, if there are needs for new and expanded worship space in the future, that is something that may be considered in a different campaign. The meeting space proposed in this campaign project would be large enough to provide temporary worship space for the entire church.
WHAT IS MY PART?
Your part is to prayerfully and financially participate in the entirety of the Beyond Campaign. The success of the Beyond Campaign at Perkinsville depends on our membership prayerfully and passionately getting behind our vision for disciple making and church planting. Over the course of the campaign, you will have the opportunity to pledge or give over and above your tithe. We want you to pledge because you believe in the vision, not just because you want a new building. We want members not simply giving out their excess, but sacrificially giving to see the first step of this vision become a reality. You will be asked to grow and go in new ways, too. Basically, your part is to prayerfully ask God how you can be part of something beyond yourself. Collectively, as a church, we have the opportunity to truly give beyond our generation, geography, and our now. It will be quite a journey!
